Collection: Crafted Liberation
A collective act of resistance, transformed into design.
Crafted Liberation is not a brand, but a global collective action by RK Collective, led by Iranian-Australian designer Nila Rezaei. Born from the Women, Life, Freedom movement following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, it reclaims symbols of oppression and reimagines them as objects of resilience and empowerment.
Over 500 Iranian women across the world donated their unwanted headscarves, textiles that once carried the weight of restriction. Through advanced material processes, these scarves were transformed into seats: powerful symbols of exclusion in Iran, where women have long been banned from entering sporting arenas.
By turning the seat of exclusion into a seat of belonging, Crafted Liberation gives form to collective voices and reminds us of the power of small acts to spark global dialogue. Each chair is more than a place to sit, it is a vessel of memory, a call for equality, and an artefact of cultural storytelling.
Crafted Liberation continues to evolve through exhibitions, collaborations, and commissions. Its methodology, transforming discarded or donated textiles into meaningful, functional objects, is both a design practice and a form of activism. Whether presented in museums, public institutions, or through curated partnerships, each seat invites us to pause, reflect, and imagine a future where every woman has a place.
